if you're supporting him/her you have the intention of marrying. dating someone doesn't mean you're going to marry him/her

I totally agree there Jess, I think dating at a young age learns you how to share yourself with someone else, instead of being self centered. I have never been with anyone for more than a couple of days, until I met my current girlfriend. We have been together now for 6 months, and I never thought I would be in a relationship that long. In what way do you mean "support him/her? We share things together, like I will buy her gifts, but she buys them for me in return. I buy her meals, she buys me meals in return, we take it in turns to pay for the cinema. This is how you learn to love and be loved.
