What is bullying?
Bullying is defined as “a blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people.”
This can be misleading, however. Not always are the bullies big and
tough, but they can also be shorter, skinnier, whatever the cause may
be. Just about anyone you look at could be a bully. There is information
that points that 1 in every six students are bullied regularly. They
are making fun of, harming, or causing some sort of trouble to a certain
person, purposely, just to spite them.
What is the effects on bullying?
A recent study shows that people who commit homicide are more likely to
have been bullied as children than the ones who were shot! Too many
times before have we heard of raging fights, sometimes causing death as
an effect of bullying. Rarely do we have mass school shootings, but the
person who was behind it was more or less once bullied.

Not always are bullied children turned this violent. They could become
moodier, upset, and stop talking with their own family. They could be
skipping school in fear that they will be bullied.
Consequences of a Bully
Bullying in general is a lose-lose situation. There is consequences on both ends of the spectrum. Being a bully increases the risk of experiencing
depression and physiological distress. In addition, bullies are more
likely to develop and anxiety disorder, and to abuse substances such as
tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana. Being a bully also increases the odds
of having future run-ins with the law. By their mid-thirties, 60% of
people who bullied in grade 6 through 9 have at least one criminal
conviction. In the long run, being a bully can affect your adult home
life. Former bullies tend to have problems with long term relationships
and may be abusive to their spouse or child.
There are also consequences of being the victim of a bully. Victims can
experience health-related consequences such as anxiety, sadness, sleep
difficulties, low self-esteem, headaches, and stomach pains. On the
social end of things, victims tend to have little to no friends at all.
Because of their low self-esteem and high anxiety levels, it’s hard for
them to make friends.
Why do bullies bully?
Bullies do what they do to hide inadequacy. Bullies mainly do what they do to
make themselves feel better and get themselves attention to be more
popular. They usually bully because they live in an insecure environment
or they are jealous about who the person is and what he is capable of.
When people bully, it is usually aimed for the people that are
different, physically and personality wise. When I say physically, I
mean the victim's physical appearance. For instance, they are more
likely to aim for the short people, fat,not attractive, and sometimes
the skinny people.
How is bullying still around?
It’s getting to the point where just about everyone knows their place in
this world. We are learning slowly that we all are equal. So why, you
might ask, is bullying still around?
In short, people glamourize bullying. They think it is funny to watch a
kid suffer from abuse just because he has some sort of a defect. In many
cases, we see that bullies like to travel in packs. They like to pick
on the weak together, to make themselves feel better.
Anyone could be a bully.
This is true. People can basically bully someone everyday. Just about every
person who has gone through middle school has bullied before. Which,
consequently also means that just about everyone has been bullied.
Everyone has been affected by bullying in some way. It will most likely
always be around in some way, but you can take the initiative and stop
the madness in your school.
