Smacking (Spanking) Your Child
Do you think parents have the right to punish their own children as they see fit, or is it abuse?

Re: Smacking (Spanking) Your Child
In the UK, you are no longer allowed to smack your children. But, in my house it goes like this:
Minor trouble: Grounded and all electrical stuff removed for a week.
Big trouble: Over knee and bum smacked
Serious trouble: Those dreaded words "go and get my belt!"

Re: Smacking (Spanking) Your Child
a little smack for younger kids is okay, but hitting with an item is NOT. Grounding would be the best, though I've never been grounded

there is a difference between smacking so it hurts and smacking so it does damage.

Re: Smacking (Spanking) Your Child
Its weird my parents have always allowed me a lot of freedom when it comes to punishment-as in I have never been really punished
In the UK it is not illegal to smack your child, There is however certian guidelines to follow when smacking your child eg no weapons things like that
Why do children not get a chance to learn from there mistakes, instead we have things like groundings and smacking, I think they can be affective but not as effective...

The reason this form of punishment exist is that its designed to hurt, not damage. Its not supposed to feel good, so you have a reason to not do it again.

I still think that talking to a child is better, even little kids, its hard but I always think it is the best option first

But what good is it? They are just going to do it again, because they think "Oh, nothing happened to me last time so ill just do it again and be fine"

Derri, not everyone is like you. I wouldn't be as "respectful" as I am today if my parents haven't had spanked me.

Derri, this was passed in the house of lords in 2004:
"However a Lords amendment which outlaws smacks that leave marks or cause mental harm was allowed."
How can you smack a child WITHOUT leaving a mark?
How many parents have got in trouble by kids complaining about being smacked? Thousands! If a child reports their parent(s) for smacking, they CAN be charged with Child Abuse, or ABH (Actual Bodily Harm)

So technically it is still legal and there is a time refrance to the smacking and leaving a mark it is something like 5 minutes or something and it cannot used a weapon and also it cannot leave a permanant bruise

Re: Smacking (Spanking) Your Child
As I have said before, if you do it right the smack will hurt but not do damage, and the red mark will NOT last very long at all.

Thats the law in the united kingdom, it can be a smack but the red mark has to go away within a few minutes and is not with a weapon there is also other guidlines

I think spanking is perfectly fine, I mean really hitting someone on the butt does help prove the point and now in days EVERTHING is considered child abuse!

Re: Smacking (Spanking) Your Child
I don't see why ppl get so worked up about spanking their children. My little sister Gwen (who some may know) has Down Syndrome and it a challenge. Sometimes the only way any of us can get through to her is through spanking. It's not like we're seriously hurting her, just getting the point across, and within a minute, she's forgotten about it, and has moved on.

sometimes kids need to learn lessons and that is why they get spankings every once and a while

Well yes and No.
Of course there are limits. With a light yet firm hand, I see no problem with.
When you are turning those hands into fists or getting a belt. The line is over stepped.
I agree with it but only to an extent.
