Comics to go digital?

THE Dandy, best known for cow-pie munching cartoon character Desperate Dan, is facing closure after 75 years.
The UK’s oldest children’s comic is expected to be pulled once its publishers complete a review of their titles.
Recent figures show The Dandy’s sales have plummeted from two million in its heyday to less than 8000.
DC Thomson last night admitted they were looking to close the magazine – but promised to try to revive the title online.
The company are hoping a move to digital will encourage youngsters to revisit famous characters such as Korky the Cat.
It’s
thought Desperate Dan may even join Dennis the Menace on sister title
The Beano in an effort to keep the strongman in print.
A
spokeswoman for DC Thomson confirmed: “We are carrying out a review of
our magazines business to meet the challenges of the rapidly changing
publishing industry.
“But we’re excited that the digital revolution has also given us an opportunity to innovate and develop.
“We’re confident future generations will continue to enjoy our much-loved products and characters.”
The Dandy first went on sale in 1937 costing 2p, with a free whistle.
It outlived other kids’ titles The Beezer and The Topper by at least 20 years.
But
the advent of the internet and computer gaming marked the beginning of
the end for The Dandy – despite efforts to make the comic feel more
up-to-date by introducing strips featuring Harry Hill and Cheryl Cole.
The Dandy also featured Beryl the Peril, Bananaman and Cuddles and Dimples.
But Desperate Dan, who can lift a cow with one arm, is probably the cartoon strip most closely associated with the title.
He has been immortalised with an 8ft bronze statue in DC Thomson's home town of Dundee.
