The Mask
I once went to a party.
I looked around to see the brilliance-
the music, the lights, the people.
My friends came in with strange masks
that were concealing every part of their faces.
I asked them why and they shoved a mask in my hands.
I looked at the dull mask in my hands
Almost everybody had a mask, I noticed.
I walked alone.
But these people! They were all waving masks in my face!
I pushed them aside with my heart beating fast.
I jumped into the dancing,
but I was pushed away.
I tried and I tried. Until the tears ran down my face.
I shoved the mask on my face in fierce anger.
The outside circle opened up and I jumped in.
I moved in further, only to be spat out again.
I found a trinket and put it on my mask.
I pushed further in.
I continued to adorn my mask
I approached the center of the group.
People were exhausted.
I thought everyone was happy here!
The weight of their masks
caused their backs to hunch.
They were strong, but broken people.
I wanted to go back.
But I got pushed further in.
I want this mask off!
I felt for the edge of the mask.
I couldn't find it. Where is my face?
Do I have a face anymore?
What did I look like!?
This mask, why won't it come off?
